Toyota cars electric - What the future holds for the Japanese automobile giant

Toyota has revealed its plan to join other top carmakers in venturing into the production of fully electric cars. The Japanese company is set to launch an electric SUV in Europe and other regions in the coming months. Not to forget, the carmaker has done really well in the hybrid area, hitting laudable emission standards.

The idea of Toyota cars electric has been a bit slow considering the amount of attention the automaker has put into the production of hybrid Prius and the fuel-cell vehicles like the Mirai. Understandably, the renewed interest is based on the good reception given to the EVs globally. The electric car market is booming and a lot of investors are interested in getting a piece of the cake.

Toyota is planning to take the bull by the horn by making sure its first set of EVs are powered by a solid state battery pack. This is a welcomed development since the solid-state battery charges faster and offers extra range in the same size as the regular lithium-ion batteries.

Toyota has unveiled its new bZ4X electric car, which appears like a tall-riding midsize crossover. It also shares resemblance with the Mirai hydrogen-powered model and Prius hybrid. The model is the result of a successful collaboration between Toyota and Subaru. People will stand to see the first Toyota EVs on the road in a few years to come since the company is planning on commencing production in the middle of 2022.

The company is also planning on working on its unique Battery electric Toyotas (BEVs), which is a wider mix of electric-powered vehicles. We had already witnessed Toyota cars electric project through Lexus, its luxury division. The first battery-electric model by the division was the Lexus UX300e, which arrived in 2020 and a practical model from the smallest SUV lineup. The model features a battery of 54kWh, which promises a range of 196 miles and ability to sprint from zero to 62 mph in 7.5 secs.

The first Toyota cars electric initiative was a success since the company’s knowledge of hybrids helped with the development of the electric motor found on the UX300e. The company has released incredible electric-related vehicles such as its self-charging hybrid, which was its 2020 Yaris. Its RAV4 plug-in hybrid model is also a testament to the company’s journey into electrification.

The Toyota bZ4X  will be the company’s first all-electric SUV, spotted recently at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show. It is the first EV under Toyota’s latest Beyond Zero (BZ) lineup of vehicles with zero carbon emissions. The model will offer a longer wheelbase than its look-alike RAV4 and also rides lower.

The Toyota bZ4X will offer many unique features such as ability to make use of solar power to remove the effect of cold weather on the range offered by the EV. The inside promises a very attractive cabin design and a functional touchscreen. The company is yet to provide full details about its range.

All in all, the Toyota bZ4X is expected to be the pioneer in Toyota’s electric lineup and will be a milestone which marks the Japanese automaker’s penetration into this potential car segment.
